Seiji Ozawa is a Japanese conductor. He entered the Toho Gakuen High School of Music in Tokyo at the piano department, but was forced to give up his pianist career after injuring his fingers while playing rugby. Toho Gakuen graduated as a conductor, in the same year he was awarded the first prize at the Besancon international competition of young conductors. In 1961, Seiji Ozawa became the second conductor with Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the head of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 2002-2010 - Musical Director of the Vienna State Opera. Ozawa's gigantic repertoire includes music from Bach and Haydn to Xenakis and Takemitsu. Among his major works are the world premieres of San Francisco Polyphony.
