“Crooked Kingdom” starts off with a bang. Inej has been captured and Kaz Brekker’s crew has to fight against the odds and against time to get her back. It is amusing that Van Eck actually thinks he can outsmart Kaz, someone who has had to survive by outsmarting other people, but bless his heart that man tries. Soon enough they realize they have more problems. The secrets and dangers of the jurda is more than they expected, especially for Grisha. “Crooked Kingdom” feels a little claustrophobic. It happens primarily in Ketterdam and there is always a deadline to be met. They are racing against time in a dark dank city and you can feel it while you read it. Leigh Bardugo really pushes through that suffocating feeling. Every character has a moment to shine and show their powers and why Kaz Brekker chose THEM. The special edition is absolutely wonderful and even if I am a little against this new trend of many many editions just for the sake of ‘pretty’, I could not stop myself. The artwork is beautiful, reminiscent of tarot cards and the insides of the covers would make a perfect wall paper.
