From the studio of fin de siècle Vienna’s most inspired painter emerged women clothed in gold and galaxies. Gustav Klimt (Austrian, 1862–1918), pursued by the city’s elite for his spectacular portraits of society women, never married; he chose instead to share a large apartment with his mother and two of his sisters. For nearly two decades his lover was Emilie Flöge, a fashion designer and the owner, with her sisters, of a shop that catered to wealthy women. The Klimt and Flöge families were closely intertwined: Gustav’s younger brother and artistic collaborator, Ernst, was married to Emilie’s older sister Helene. Of the several portraits he made of his companion, the one presented here is Gustav Klimt’s most splendid. Her round face and soft curls are enveloped in a flowery halo, while her body, clothed in fabrics where stars are born, nearly vanishes.
