Don't look so shocked! You may not think magic is bad, but the protagonist of our story, Clay, certainly does. And really, who can blame him? After all, it is a magic journal that gets him expelled from school and lands him at Earth Ranch, a summer camp for wayward youths. A camp located on a volcanic island. (And yes, of course the volcano is active. There's nothing like the threat of imminent annihilation by volcanic ash and lava to straighten out a 'troubled' kid).

And it's the promise of magic that leads Clay to explore the island's abandoned library, which may or may not be haunted. Plus it's magic book that's at the centre of Clay's investigation into the strange history of the island and his even stranger fellow campers. After this investigation leads Clay to a twisted and dangerous secret...well who can blame him for hating magic at that point?
