Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, has big dreams of leaving his lowly upbringing on the Kentish moors behind and becoming a sophisticated gentleman. When he inherits a sum of money from an anonymous benefactor, his once suffocating existence with his vicious sister and her kindly husband Joe expands to encompass new experiences, people and opportunities.
