Nine-year-old Anna grew up in a wealthy, not very religious Jewish family in Berlin. Her father is a well-known writer and journalist who also publishes articles against Hitler and his party. When the political situation came to a head when the National Socialists came to power in early 1933, Anna's life changed forever. A life in Germany is no longer an option for the family. And so they leave all their belongings, including Anna's pink plush rabbit, and emigrate to Switzerland. While her parents are desperately looking for work there, Anna makes new friends abroad. But even in Switzerland, Anna's family has to constantly grapple with growing anti-Semitism.
