Istoria LEGO a început într-o tâmplărie din Danemarca, iar primele jucării LEGO erau realizate 100% din lemn.

Ole Kirk Christiansen era un simplu tâmplar, cu multă ambiţie. De când era tânăr, Christiansen şi-a transformat iubirea pentru lemn în afacere, iar în 1916 şi-a deschis primul atelier. La început, atelierul producea scări, scaune şi mese de călcat.

În 1929, când bursa din SUA s-a prăbuşit şi economia era la pământ, Christiansen a luat decizia de a utiliza lemnul pentru a crea bunuri ieftine care s-ar vinde mai repede; printre acestea se numărau şi jucăriile.

Dragostea sa pentru jucării l-a ajutat să-şi readucă compania pe piaţă. Ca urmare a noului început, pe 10 august 1932 şi-a redenumit compania: leg godt, care înseamnă „joacă bună”, în cele din urmă fiind abreviat în LEGO.

În ciuda interdicţiei, Christiansen a adus în Danemarca prima matriţă cu injecţie de plastic, iar în 1949 a început să realizeze noi experimente pentru jucăriile sale. Compania a ajuns să confecţioneze produse din plastic denumite „Cărămizi de Îmbinare”.

Orice piesă LEGO produsă din 1955 încoace poate fi conectată cu oricare alta din zilele noastre.

Piesele LEGO au devenit din simple jucării personaje de film, desene şi nu numai.
