Walter Bernardini began life in a typical Glasgow tenement, in Shettleston, moving to Tollcross in the years before the Second World War. Life was no bed of roses. The Bernardinis stayed in a classic room-and-kitchen, where young Walter slept in a bed recess in the front room.
