      Orizont Concret (editie bilingva RO/EN)

Dedicated to the artist Ștefan Sevastre (1926–2017), “Concrete Horizon” introduces one of the personalities of post-war art in Romania to the general public. The publication focuses on his artistic and exhibition activity from the 1960s to the late 1990s, analysing his work in direct relation to the changing ideological landscape of the historical decades, as well as to the international developments in art of that period.

The texts of the invited authors—Andrei Rosetti, Vít Havránek and Mihai Sârbulescu—as well as the series of works reproduced with the support of the Sevastre archive and several museum collections in Romania, showcase his artistic path, sometimes carried out in difficult historical conditions, and highlight the affinities of language and conceptual structure with geometric abstraction.

The publication also addresses aspects related to the curatorial and teaching activity of Ștefan Sevastre, a professor at the “Nicolae Tonitza” Arts Highschool in Bucharest, as well as the role of abstraction and concrete art in the socialist artistic landscape in Romania, in defining new coordinates—in the sense of renewal—intended to bring Romanian art back into proximity with the international artistic course.

Publication supported by: Administration of the National Cultural Fund, Sevastre Family, Institute of the Present’s donors.
