Orasul de pe malul Cibinului s-a dezvoltat pe locul anticei asezari daco-romane Cedonia. Intemeierea sa este legata de colonizarea sasilor in Transilvania, in secolul al XII-lea. A fost atestat documentar pentru prima data in 1191 (Cibinium), fiind numit ulterior Hermannstadt.
