The political life of the Romanians in Dualist Hungary at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th constantly preoccupied the Romanian historiography. Numerous papers and studies have been dedicated to this subject both in the interwar period, as well as during the communist regime. Even after 1989, when the selection scope of research themes witnessed a significant expansion, as a result of the lift of censorship from communist times, the afore mentioned subject remained one of great interest. While the present work can be circumscribed to this broad research direction, it aims to deal with a topic which has until now been relegated to the periphery of historical discourse.
Within this broader research direction, certain topics were favoured, as for instance the important moments of the national political life of Romanians in Hungary, or the analysis and interpretation of the two currents that characterized the national movement (national-activism and national-passivism). Thus, a considerable number of works were dedicated to subjects such as the creation of the Romanian National Party (RNP), the Memorial of 1882, The Reply and “The Memorandum” of 1892, the internal crisis within the RNP of the last decade of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the National Conference in Sibiu in 1905 and its outcome, the national movement and the Great Union of Alba Iulia.
