The first performance of Carmen on March 3, 1875 provoked such a hostile reaction that Bizet left Paris, physically and emotionally ill. He died three months later after two heart attacks. The gigantic scandal that followed the premiere will also have been partly the result of Bizet's attempts to reshape the Opéra Comique genre. Still, it must be said that Carmen is the most famous example in opera history of a failure corrected over time: Today, Carmen is one of the most performed operas in the world.
