Inspired by the retro party atmosphere of Eric Comstock’s work reproduced here, originally titled Robot Friends, we’ve named this cover Come Together after one of our favourite songs of the 1960s. Comstock, an illustrator and designer, lives in Austin, Texas, and has recently released his first children’s book.
Simple shapes come to life in the quirky pop art of Eric Comstock. An illustrator, designer and children’s book author, Comstock’s love of children’s literature manifests in these charming illustrations from our Retro Pop! series. Comstock spent over a decade in advertising, lending him his retro sensibilities, before taking up illustration full-time. His work has a special and distinct look, which has led to collaborations with Land of Nod and Hallmark, among others.
Comstock was encouraged to pursue a career in the arts after showing talent in an illustration class he took in college. Now living in Austin, Texas, his inspiration is drawn from his background in advertising and his colourful passion for music. A collector of old jazz albums, Comstock is richly inspired by music and the connection he has found in children’s literature. He has recently released his first children’s book, Charlie Piechart and the Case of the Missing Pizza Slice, with Marilyn Sadler.
Drawing inspiration from their charming and retro characteristics, we’ve named the designs in this Retro Pop! series after some of our favourite songs from the 1950s and ’60s. Comstock’s whimsical design, Robot Friends, is reimagined as our Come Together journal cover. Embodying the spirit of Comstock’s playful and friendly pop art, we hope this design allows the same joy and playful spirit to come together in your world.
