Enrico Rava's ECM "comeback album" 'Easy Living' was a runaway hit of 2004 ("A triumph" - The Guardian), winning prizes and delighting the UK public on a very successful tour this spring. Now he and pianist Stefano Bollani journey to New York for a spontaneously assembled session with drummer Paul Motian. The combin-ation of trumpet/piano/drums is highly unorthodox but the players showed an immediate understanding.
The trio starts out with Gershwin's The Man I Love, follows up with Motian's Birdsong (sounding like a cross between Thelonious Monk and Satie), dwells awhile on Rava's beautiful title track, plays Puccini's "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca (reinterpreting opera themes has become a Rava speciality), and on Enrico's tune Cornettology cross references the musical worlds of Charlie Parker and Ornette Coleman.
Recorded 2004.
